A Spys Guide to a Top Secret Job Search
A Spys Guide to a Top Secret Job SearchA Spys Guide to a Top Secret Job SearchLooking for a new job while employed can take a lot of effort, from strategically planning interviews to finding time to rework your resume. But a secret job search can be surprisingly fun if you look at it from the right angle. Why not take it to the next level by adopting a 007 persona? After all, it takes a stealthy, savvy and suave person to keep an active job search off the bosss radar. Bring a little excitement and edge to your job search by thinking of yourself as a secret agent working on a top-secret mission1. Use Your Gadgets WiselyTake advantage of mobile apps. Its the digital age, and technology has provided many conveniences that were not possible before. Use this to your advantage. Simply Hired has an app that is available on iTunes and Android. Searching on a tabletcomputer or phone is effortless, and its more discrete than looking on a big computer screen. Speaking of whichDont search on you r work computer. If you conduct your personal job search during what are supposed to be work hours, youre putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Employers have the right to search your browser history. Moreover, if they find out they wont be pleased about your activities.2. Stay IncognitoKeep your resume under wraps. Dont post your resume on every job board someone is bound to notice. If you hand out your resume, make it clear that your current employer is not aware of your covert operations.Dress appropriately. Dont walk into work in full-on interview attire if you dress casually on a day-to-day basis. Leave your interview clothes in the car, or mix pieces of formal and casual clothes. Get creative. You can disguise yourself in many ways.3. For Your Eyes OnlyUse LinkedIn carefully. Hailed as the distributionspolitik to network for job opportunities, LinkedIn provides a great space to build connections. Start by interacting more with your network and updating your online profile . As always, check your settings to select the degree of privacy before you start sharing information.Approach social media with caution. For better and worse, social media is where content can go viral. A private job search, however, should not be something you share with your entire social network. Use private messages, avoid status updates about your job search and adjust your privacy settings. Remember nothing online is private.Share selectively. A job search is insider knowledge and best not to be shared with coworkers. Telling your coworkers is the easiest way to blow your cover, as people like to gossip.4. Double Agent StatusCreate and remember your backstory. You need a cover for your interviews and calls. Doctor appointments, dentist check-ups, whatever it needs to be a reasonable and believable story. Schedule them cautiously and space them out to avoid suspicion.Separate your job search from your workspace. Dont take calls in the office and dont schedule them during work hours. Use your personal emaille on your personal phone or home computer for electronic correspondence with potential employers.Finish strong. Keep on keepin on at work, and dont fall victim to unprofessionalism because you anticipate leaving the company soon. Think of the long-term benefit you want to keep a good relationship with your current employer for any future recommendations or opportunities.5. If Your Cover is BlownHonestly is the best policy. Its important to prepare an appropriate explanation for your employer if your mission is compromised. You want to give a straight answer with a carefully constructed, yet truthful reason. Be sure to emphasize that you are still dedicated to your current role.Leading two lives simultaneously isnt easy, but you can learn from great secret agents like James Bond and Jason Bourne. The key to succeeding undercover? Tread carefully. In the words of George Herbert, The life of spies is to know, not to be known.Read Related ArticlesUse Free Time to Advance Your Job Search5 Tips for Keeping Your Job Search Secret from Your Boss

Make over your resume with something that will jolt recruiters
Make over your resume with something that will jolt recruitersMake over your resume with something that will jolt recruitersIt had been seven months since Drew Grant, a then-unemployed culture editor and writer in Los Angeles, had had a single job bewerbungsgesprch. And so, like many frustrated job binnenseekers, she decided to hire someone to juice up her resume. Not too long after, she proudly posted the resume to Facebook and updated her status to reflect her new job as Special Features Editor at Collider. Her jubilant update readYou guys want in on how I managed to land my dream job after seven months of not so much as a single interview? Im feeling benevolent today, so heres my secret I hired Hagan Blount of Infographics Resumes to revamp my boring CV into something that looked like it welches designed by Chip Kidd. Within a MONTH of sending in Hagans total rehaul of my resume, I welches interviewed at my top three dream companies and offered positions at two of them.I went sear ching for a resume consultant, hoping to find someone who could streamline my experience in culture journalism into a more professional form. I never dreamed of what ended up providing me with an infographic CV so unique that calling it merely a resume seems prosaic The result well, as you can see, it speaks for itselfGrants updated resume.Nothing worked for almost a year, Grant added to the Ladders about her job search. Then Hagan made my resume and within a few weeks I was getting interviews and offers. It also helped her freelance career I was making no inroads, Grant said, and since my resume went out, Ive been commissioned by The New York Times and Harpers Bazaar for pieces. Its been, by far, the smartest career investment Ive ever made. What a difference a rehaul makes. While many job seekers tweak here and there, sometimes a total rebuild is needed, as Grants experience shows. And sometimes, you cant go wrong with a truly creative, out-of-the-box resume, either.Infographic res umes a numbers gameLadders spoke with Hagan Blount of Infographic Resumes about his collaborative, numbers-based approach. Blount hit a low point in 2011 Unemployed in Manhattan and living off dumplings he purchased at $9 for 50, he hit the streets and stood in front of the Apple Store one day, holding up a Will Tweet for Food sign to advertise his social media work.He met someone who ran an entrepreneur school, who showed him the types of resumes everyone who graduated would receive. He showed me a bunch of these resumes that were from graphic designers, Blount said.It was his eureka moment. They were creative and they looked like peoples personal brands.Blount went back to his apartment set about teaching himself how to make a similar resume for himself with no graphic design experience. Designing resumes has been his bread and butter ever since.I feel like what somebody wants to see on a resume is How can this person drive ROI at my company? Blount says. Can I put them in a role and know that this person is going to make more of an impact than the next person?Employers are always looking for that elusive cultural fit, and Blount tries to tackle that on the resume, too Its hard to show a cultural fit on a resume, he says. But with every resume, he makes sure to include an account from his client about a challenge they faced at their organization, boiled down into a personal statement that says how they were able to overcome obstacles and succeed for the company.Blounts infographic resumes lean heavily on numbers. In every one of my resumes there is an achievement section that highlights the numbers, he says. Generating them is a large part of the process with his clients. There are all sorts of numbers there to dig those up in a brainstorming session. Like a hairdresser, how many miles of hair do you think youve cut? How many clients have you had? There are all sorts of stuff you can think about depending on what profession youre in.I ask the question, Is the re anything thats interesting about you that doesnt get to be put on a traditional resume? There was this guy who had been to like 65 countries. Well, why did this person go to these countries? How is that gonna help me with your work? And it can, depending on the role, and sometimes it doesnt, but I just ask those questions to find out if theres something interesting that I can put on a resume and just disrupt the reader a little bit more. Just give that person a little bit more of the human feel on a resume. Because it is a little bit cold, this industry.

4 life hacks from ancient philosophers that will make you happier
4 life hacks from ancient philosophers that will make you happier4 life hacks from ancient philosophers that will make you happierYouve probably heard about Stoics or Stoicism - and most of what you know is wrong. They werent joyless bores. The ancient Stoics were the first lifehackers the Original Gangsters of Making Life Awesome.ViaA Guide to the Good Life The Ancient species of Stoic JoyThe Stoics. . . were very much interested in human psychology and were not at all averse to using psychological tricks to overcome certain aspects of human psychology, such as the presence in us of negative emotion.Awesome.But does the Old World hold up when it meets the New World? Does science agree with the thinkers of antiquity?Absolutely.I enthusiastically, maybe evenfrantically, suggest you roll old school. In the past, Ive looked at the science behindDale Carnegies old saws about getting along with people. Lets give the saatkorn treatment to classical thinkers.Where do science and the great min ds of the old world agree when it comes to living the good life?1. Whats the worst that could happen?Ever asked that? Congrats, youre a stoic philosopher.Negative Visualization is one of the main tools of Stoicism.Really thinking about just how awful things can be often has the ironic effect of making you realize theyre not that bad. From my interview with Oliver Burkeman, author ofThe Antidote Happiness for People Who Cant Stand Positive ThinkingIts what the Stoics call, the premeditation that theres actually a lot of peace of mind to be gained in thinking carefully and in detail and consciously about how badly things could go.In most situations youre going to discover that your anxiety or your fears about those situations were exaggerated. In fact, the Stoics pushed it further take a second and imagine losing the things that matter to you most. Family. Friends.Yes, its scary. But doesnt it make you appreciate them all that much mora when you take the time to think about losing them ?A few seconds of thinking about loss can dramatically boost gratitude.ViaA Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyAt spare moments in the day, make it a point to contemplate the loss of whatever you value in life. It can make you realize, if only for a time, how lucky you are - how much you have to be thankful for, almost regardless of your circumstancesAnd science agreesPracticing gratitude is at the center of the single most proven technique for boosting happiness3 blessings.Though deliberately thinking about losing stuff may sound morbid, the fact that it taps into emotions is powerfully motivating.Gratitude is how you stop taking things for granted. How you stay happy after the newness of things is gone. How you keep love alive.(mora on negative visualizationhere.)2. As ifThe Stoics valued tranquility and thought being angry was a waste of time. But what should you do when your blood boils?Force a smile. Soften your voice. Seneca thought if you act calm, you will be come calm.ViaA Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyWhen angry, says Seneca, we should take steps to turn all angers indications into their opposites. We should force ourselves to relax our face, soften our voice, and slow our pace of walking. If we do this, our internal state will soon come to resemble our external state, and our anger, says Seneca, will have dissipated.Does outright faking it really work?Yup. And science agrees.Researchers told people to smile. What happened? They actually felt happier.ViaThe As If PrincipleMore than 26,000 people responded. All of the participants were randomly assigned to one of a handful of groups and asked to carry out various exercises designed to make them happier. . . When it came to increasing happiness, those altering their facial expressions came out on top of the class . . .(More on fake it until you make it here.)3. Make it atreatWe want everything and we want it yesterday. The Stoics, on the other hand, used to deliberatel y walk around on cold days without a coat. Or skip meals to become hungry. Why?Denying yourself something makes you appreciate the things you take for granted.Ancient advice? Yeah, it sounds like something my grandfather would have said. But science agrees wholeheartedly.Harvard professor and author of Happy Money, Michael Norton says a bit of self-denial is a huge happiness booster. . . if you love, every day, having the same coffee, dont have it for a few days. Once you have it again, its going to be way more amazing than all of the ones that you would have had in the meantime. . .Its not give it up forever. Its give it up for short periods of time, and I promise you youre going to love it even more when you come back to it.Making the things you take for granted into a treat is something the ancients and scientists agree on. Plus it has other benefits too.Grandpa was right it does make you tougher to go without. It increases willpower.ViaA Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyWhat Stoics discover, though, is that willpower is like muscle power The more they exercise their will, the stronger it gets. Indeed, by practicing Stoic self-denial techniques over a long period, Stoics can transform themselves into individuals remarkable for their courage and self-control.Science agrees.Self-control expert and author of Willpower, Roy Baumeister, says exerting discipline increases disciplinePeople have said for centuries that you can build character by making yourself do things you dont want to do, thatby exerting self-discipline you can make yourself into a stronger person. That does appear to be correct. And whats more responsible for success than IQ or pretty much anything else? Self-control.Today skip that Starbucks or that cookie. Itll be even better tomorrow. And itll increase your willpower.(More on how to boost self-controlhere.)4. Its OKto stumbleDoes Stoicism seem hard? Dont want to think about how awful things can be right now?Dont want to give up your ice cream for a day? They knew that too. What did Epictetus tell his students after he taught them these Stoic lifehacks? He told them what to do when they screw up - because we all do.Forgive yourself.ViaA Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyThe Stoics understood that they would encounter setbacks in their practice of Stoicism Thus, Epictetus, after telling his students what they must do to practice Stoicisim, went on to tell them what they should do when they failed to follow his advice. He expected, in other words, that novice Stoics would routinely backslide. Along similar lines, Marcus recommends that when our practice falls short of Stoic precepts, we should not become despondent and certainly should not give up our attempts to practice Stoicism instead, we should return to the attack and realize that if we can do the right thing, Stoically speaking, most of the time, we are doing pretty well for ourselves. And what does science say we should dowhen we los e self-control or procrastinate?Forgive yourself and move on.ViaThe Willpower Instinct How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of ItStudy after study shows that self-criticism is consistently associated with less motivation and worse self-control. It is also one of the single biggest predictors of depression, which drains both I will power and I want power. In contrast, self-compassion- being supportive and kind to yourself, especially in the face of stress and failure- is associated with more motivation and better self-control.In trying to do anything to better your life, its okay to stumble. The ancient Stoics were the first lifehackers The Original Gangsters of Making Life Awesome.Via A Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyThe Stoics were very much interested in human psychology and were not at all averse to using psychological tricks to overcome certain aspects of human psychology, such as the presence in us of negative emotion.Awesome. But does the Old World hold up when it meets the New World? Does science agree with the thinkers of antiquity?Absolutely. I enthusiastically, maybe even frantically, suggest you roll old school. In the past, Ive looked at the science behind Dale Carnegies old saws about getting along with people. Lets give the same treatment to classical thinkers.Where do science and the great minds of the old world agree when it comes to living the good life?1) Whats the worst that could happen?Ever asked that? Congrats, youre a stoic philosopher.Negative Visualization is one of the main tools of Stoicism.Really thinking about just how awful things can be often has the ironic effect of making you realize theyre not that bad. From my interview with Oliver Burkeman, author of The Antidote Happiness for People Who Cant Stand Positive ThinkingIts what the Stoics call, the premeditation that theres actually a lot of peace of mind to be gained in thinking carefully and in detail and consciously about how badly things could go. In most situations youre going to discover that your anxiety or your fears about those situations were exaggerated. In fact, the Stoics pushed it further take a second and imagine losing the things that matter to you most. Family. Friends.Yes , its scary. But doesnt it make you appreciate them all that much more when you take the time to think about losing them?A few seconds of thinking about loss can dramatically boost gratitude.Via A Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyAt spare moments in the day, make it a point to contemplate the loss of whatever you value in life. It can make you realize, if only for a time, how lucky you are - how much you have to be thankful for, almost regardless of your circumstances And science agrees Practicing gratitude is at the center of the single most proven technique for boosting happiness 3 blessings.Though deliberately thinking about losing stuff may sound morbid, the fact that it taps into emotions is powerfully motivating.Gratitude is how you stop taking things for granted. How you stay happy after the newness of things is gone. How you keep love alive.(More on negative visualization here.)2) As ifThe Stoics valued tranquility and thought being angry was a waste of ti me. But what should you do when your blood boils?Force a smile. Soften your voice. Seneca thought if you act calm, you will become calm.Via A Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyWhen angry, says Seneca, we should take steps to turn all angers indications into their opposites. They actually felt happier.Via The As If PrincipleMore than 26,000 people responded. All of the participants were randomly assigned to one of a handful of groups and asked to carry out various exercises designed to make them happier When it came to increasing happiness, those altering their facial expressions came out on top of the class (More on fake it until you make i t here.)3) Make it a treatWe want everything and we want it yesterday. The Stoics, on the other hand, used to deliberately walk around on cold days without a coat. Or skip meals to become hungry. Why?Denying yourself something makes you appreciate the things you take for granted.Ancient advice? Yeah, it sounds like something my grandfather would have said. But science agrees wholeheartedly.Harvard professor and author of Happy Money, Michael Norton says a bit of self-denial is a huge happiness booster if you love, every day, having the same coffee, dont have it for a few days. Once you have it again, its going to be way more amazing than all of the ones that you would have had in the meantime. Its not give it up forever. Its give it up for short periods of time, and I promise you youre going to love it even more when you come back to it.Making the things you take for granted into a treat is something the ancients and scientists agree on. Plus it has other benefits too.Grandpa was ri ght it does make you tougher to go without. It increases willpower.Via A Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyWhat Stoics discover, though, is that willpower is like muscle power The more they exercise their will, the stronger it gets. Indeed, by practicing Stoic self-denial techniques over a long period, Stoics can transform themselves into individuals remarkable for their courage and self-control.Science agrees. Self-control expert and author of Willpower, Roy Baumeister, says exerting discipline increases disciplinePeople have said for centuries that you can build character by making yourself do things you dont want to do, that by exerting self-discipline you can make yourself into a stronger person. That does appear to be correct. And whats more responsible for success than IQ or pretty much anything else? Self-control.Today skip that Starbucks or that cookie. Itll be even better tomorrow. And itll increase your willpower.(More on how to boost self-control here.)4) Its okay to stumbleDoes Stoicism seem hard? Dont want to think about how awful things can be right now? Dont want to give up your ice cream for a day? They knew that too. What did Epictetus tell his students after he taught them these Stoic lifehacks? He told them what to do when they screw up - because we all do.Forgive yourself.Via A Guide to the Good Life The Ancient Art of Stoic JoyThe Stoics understood that they would encounter setbacks in their practice of Stoicism Thus, Epictetus, after telling his students what they must do to practice Stoicisim, went on to tell them what they should do when they failed to follow his advice. He expected, in other words, that novice Stoics would routinely backslide. Along similar lines, Marcus recommends that when our practice falls short of Stoic precepts, we should not become despondent and certainly should not give up our attempts to practice Stoicism instead, we should return to the attack and realize that if we can do the right thing, Sto ically speaking, most of the time, we are doing pretty well for ourselves. And what does science say we should do when we lose self-control or procrastinate?Forgive yourself and move on.Via The Willpower Instinct How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of ItStudy after study shows that self-criticism is consistently associated with less motivation and worse self-control. It is also one of the single biggest predictors of depression, which drains both I will power and I want power. In contrast, self-compassion- being supportive and kind to yourself, especially in the face of stress and failure- is associated with more motivation and better self-control.In trying to do anything to better your life, its okay to stumble.
